DRINK BEER, DO GOOD

At The Sumner Post Office, we’re strong believers that every business should have a social mission at its core. Our mission is for our beer to make the world a better place.

Every month 5% of our beer revenues from our venue, is donated to a different New Zealand organisation. Not profits…… revenues, that’s approximately 30 to 50% of our venues profit – we give away to local organisations each and every month. No terms and conditions, no small print – we just put the money straight into the back pockets of important local organisations and charities across the South Island.

Coastguard  Sumner is the oldest Coastguard unit in New Zealand. In 2024, it celebrated 125 years of continuous marine search and rescue services, the longest continuous service in the Southern Hemisphere. Based at Scarborough with a fleet of three rescue craft, Coastguard Sumner (previously Sumner Lifeboat Institute) operates around Banks Peninsula including Lyttleton and Pegasus Bay. As one of 63 units of Coastguard NZ, its mission is ‘Saving Lives at Sea”. Coastguard Sumner is a volunteer, not for profit organisation, fully operated by volunteers who give up their time to train weekly.

They are on call 24/7 to provide a marine rescue service, working closely with the police. Our fleet of three dedicated rescue vessels - Blue Arrow Rescue, Hamilton Jet Rescue, Ian Dewe Rescue - are designed and equipped to meet the demands of the seas and coastline around Banks Peninsula.

As a standalone financial entity, the organisation relies heavily on donations, bequests and funds from grants and sponsorships for its operating and capital costs with a small level of grant support from Coastguard NZ. Operating costs are escalating. Maintenance costs are high and ongoing, and building maintenance costs are now being incurred as the Station building has come into Coastguard Sumner ownership (it was Council owned). Health and safety requirements have added further financial demands in recent years. The funds from Shining Peak Brewery (operators of the new Sumner Post Office) will go towards purchasing new crew member customised equipment at a cost close to $2000 each.
